Thursday, January 26

My new friends from Boston, Greg and Mara, and I decided to go to Puerto Morelos to enjoy the beach and see the first night of the music festival. We left early so we could head down Cenote Road and go to the
Mojarra Cenote.

This is a nice sinkhole in the Riviera Maya, Puerto Morelos, Cenote Route, located to the left of the road, just 12.2 Km from highway Cancun-Tulum. The natural wonders of the Riviera Maya are countless, but some of the most unique to the area are the cenotes. Cenotes are created by an underground river system and are fresh water sink holes that the Maya considered to be sacred. In addition they were an incredibly important resource as a fresh water source, and the Mayans also believed they were the entrance to the underworld.

Cenote Mojarras is quite large and really look more like a large pond, than the cenotes I have seen before. But it was a nice swimming cenote, as there were warm pocket interspersed with the cold. Apparently, also, there is a gas in the water that combined with everything else exfoliates your skin. The naturalist also told us that if we lay in the water perfectly still, little fish would nibble on us and exfoliate our skin for free! I didn't try it.

After swimming around the cenote and ziplining over it (Not me!),  I lay in the hammocks. Then it was off to Puerto Morelos to lie on the beach. Greg went in snorkling and quite a few tropical fish and some barracuda.

We ate at a really good new restaurant called El Gaucho. I had eggplant parmesian, french fries, salad, rolls and a delicious oil with basil, all for 80 pesos, about $6.50.

Then it was off to the square for the first night of the music festival.

There were Mayan dancers, reggae, rock, mariachi...music from all over!

Then back to the Mayan Palace to pack and get ready for the move to Puerto Morelos and Posada el Moro...
